My name is Kelly; I have been vegan since 2009, and I was vegetarian for two years before that. This blog is an attempt to chronicle and share the joys of eating vegan in my everyday life.
Growing up, I was a very picky eater, and would not try any new or different food. I hated anything with onion in it. I didn't try Indian food until the end of college. And the list goes on. I had always thought being a vegetarian sounded appealing (how's that for a good reason? "it sounded cool"), so I gave up eating meat in college. As an avid reader, I spent a lot of time reading vegetarian books and cookbooks. I tried cooking tofu for the first time (note to past self: it will get better).
But the word vegan was scary to me. I would not read Vegan Freak because I think I knew there would be no going back. I soon realized I was lactose-intolerant (last bite of dairy was from Cold Stone Creamery, ouch), which eased the transition. Flash forward past a few regrettable bites of late-night pizza, I decided to become vegan.
Going vegan actually broadened my options, despite what you might think. In these past five years, I have tried more new kinds of food and cooking styles than I could have ever imagined. I have learned that I actually like food and cooking, and being vegan has shown me that there is so much out there to discover, and it is not limited by a vegan diet. You don't need to harm animals to enjoy all the joy and pleasure of food.
What else is there to say? I love reading vegan cookbooks (I sit down to read new ones like novels) and eating at new restaurants is my favorite part of traveling. Admiring fruits and vegetables at the farmer's market is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon. I live with my wonderful vegan boyfriend in Somerville, MA; we love to cook together, and on average have 4-5 different types of hot sauces and mustard in the fridge.
